Integrating Ireland is working around the country to inform and work with member groups and their members about the upcoming local and EU elections in 2009. We will be using this site to post relevant information materials we receive from organisations and members that will be of help to our members in informing and mobilising their communities to participate.
Our Members National Forum meeting in October will provide information and a space for member groups to discuss the upcoming elections and our regional meetings and trainings in the Autumn will include training for members by the Vincentian Partnership on Active Citizenship. For more information on activities in your regional network contact your Regional Development Officer on http://www.integratingireland.ie/our_network/networking/region_offices
Key Dates and what to do to register to vote in the Local & European Elections in 2009
Anyone over 18years of age on or before 15th February 2009 and ordinarily resident in an area on 1st September 2008 can add their name to that local authority’s register of electors to entitle them to vote in the Local Election in mid-2009. An RFA form must be submitted by 1st November 2008. If these forms are submitted by this date they do not require visiting Garda for a stamp stamp or proof of id, etc is required.
If you are a non-Irish EU citizen and also wish to vote in the European elections in mid-2009, then an EP1 Form must be submitted. This form must be stamped at a Garda Station (or by another public official as detailed on the form) before you submit it due to the fact that this is an election year in the EU and all member states have to cross-reference their registers of electors to ensure no-one is registered in more than one state. If you have submitted an RFA Form by 1st November the franchise officer will simply write to you if you are an EU citizen asking you to fill in the EP1 Form instead.
If someone has failed to register by 1st November or their details on the Draft Register as published on 1st November are incorrect, they need to complete a RFA1 Form. This form is a request to make an amendment to the Draft Register. It instructs the registration authority to add, amend or delete an individual from the Draft. This form is valid from 1st November to 25th November 2008, during which time the Draft Register is open to the public for inspection.
After November 25th no further changes can be made to the Register until after it comes into force on 15th February 2009. From 15th February 2009 onwards those individuals who have still not registered can then apply to go on the supplement to the register with form RFA2 which will allow them to vote in the Local elections in June 2009. These applications can be made up until two weeks prior to the actual date of the election but the application forms must be stamped at a local Garda Station (or by another public official as detailed on the form).
If you change address after you have submitted your details for the Register – you will need to fill out a RFA3 Change of Address Form (Application for inclusion in Supplement to 2009/2010 Register Of Electors) which is available from your local Council.
